The Healing Place

Trillium Health Resources is a local governmental agency (LME/MCO) that manages mental health, substance use, and intellectual/developmental disability services in eastern North Carolina. As such, they have partnered with The Healing Place of Louisville, Kentucky to bring an innovative peer-based recovery oriented program to homeless and underserved individuals in their service area. The strategy developed includes two new 200 bed facilities, the first of which has been designed for a 6.13-acre site in the Pitt County Office Park in Greenville, NC. The property was leased from the county with the intent of replicating the highly successful substance abuse recovery model originally developed by The Healing Place.

About The Project



The Healing Place provides underserved adults who live with alcohol and other drug addictions with a program to restore them to a healthy life through the following offerings:

  • An overnight emergency shelter
  • A non-medical detoxification facility
  • And a long-term, 12-step based residential peer-run recovery program

The available site provided a challenge from a design standpoint as a significant piece at the rear of the leased parcel is dedicated to a power easement. This constraint influenced design decisions early in the Schematic Design Phase and ultimately steered part of the project to be designed as a two-level building. The solution is a collection of four buildings organized around a central courtyard with a total square footage of approximately 61,500.

Alternate aesthetic solutions were developed at Client request.  The first aesthetic was based on  traditional imagery designed to emulate feelings of ‘home’ for a clientele that is predominantly homeless and looking to stabilize their life to return home.  The second aesthetic is a more contemporary solution designed to complement nearby buildings in the Pitt County Office Park.

This project is awaiting funding to proceed beyond design development.
